Islam calls on all people to behave with dignity and do only good deeds, for which they will never be ashamed. Allah Almighty sent the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon Him, as an example to all mankind and gave Him all the excellent qualities that people can only possess. He had a high culture of behavior, modesty, good behavior, politeness, tact, kindness and mercy. He always acted according to his conscience, that is, he was just and did not oppress other people.
Allah praised the Prophet in the Sacred Kur'an (Surah Al-Kalyam, Ayat 4):
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَى خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
This means: "Indeed, you have the greatest morality."
Morality includes many good qualities, including shame and conscience. This is a religious culture. And this feeling arises from high spirituality and strong faith.
When a Muslim hears the voice of conscience, it affects his behavior and reflects on his life, both religious and social. This quality instills in a person a love of fear of God and everything that strengthens the Faith, encourages to do good deeds, and it also repels him from vicious deeds and sins.
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah have mercy on him, conveyed the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him:
الإِيمَانُ بُضْعٌ وَسِتُّونَ شُعْبَةً
أَعْلاَهَا لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ وَأَدْنَاهَا إِمَاطَةُ الأَذَى
عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ وَالْحَيَاءُ شُعْبَةٌ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ
This means: "Iman has more than sixty branches, the highest of which is " La ilaha illallah ", that is," There is no other deity but Allah. " And the lowest branch is the removal of an obstacle from the road. And conscience is also one of the branches of Iman. " That is, conscience is one of the ways of manifesting Faith.
In Islam, conscience is an excellent quality, and it does not at all mean isolation, narrow-mindedness, notoriousness, or inferiority. And this is not laziness, inaction and detachment, not weakness and not a manifestation of humiliation.
Truly, conscience is a manifestation of strong faith in Allah, as well as truthful words, honesty in relation to Allah and to people. And also these are good deeds in this world. Conscience is study and teaching, good education and ethics, it is a way of life. Conscience is the strength and determination to defend the truth and uphold the principles of justice. Conscience, as scholars have said, is a moral urge that keeps a person from committing sin. And since conscience is a quality of high culture, then all the Prophets, peace be upon them, were the most conscientious of people.
The customs of great people are great customs. The qualities of great people are great qualities. The qualities of the prophets are the finest, superior qualities. Therefore, follow the example of our prophet and try to learn and adopt His culture and morality.
Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon Him, said:
إِنَّ مِمَّا أَدْرَكَ النَّاسُ مِنْ كَلاَمِ
النُّبُّوَّةِ الأُولىَ إِذَا لَمْ تَسْتَحِ فَاصْنَعْ مَا شِئْتَ
This means: "One of the sayings that people have kept from the previous Prophets, peace be upon them:" Do not do what you will be ashamed of. " Literally, the text of this Hadith says: "Do what you want, if you are not ashamed." This does not mean permission to commit sins, but means condemnation of the one who is not ashamed and does what is forbidden by the Shari-aat. That is, this Hadith encourages people to be shy and to act according to their conscience.
Feelings of shame prevent you from committing vile deeds, sins and violations. And also a bashful person will not observe with interest how other people sin or gladly talk about it. Unfortunately, in our time in modern society, shame, conscience, modesty, chastity and other virtues are considered a sign of backwardness, and few people call for this.
In fact, modesty, bashfulness, and shyness are wonderful qualities. The greatest of all the creations of Allah, the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon Him, fully possessed these qualities. Abu Saamiyid Al-Khudriy, may Allah have mercy on him, conveyed that the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon Him, was more modest and shy than the girl sitting behind the curtain in her own house. And if He saw something unpleasant, then we immediately noticed it in his face.
Shyness is of two kinds. Commendable bashfulness is a restraining barrier, an obstacle that suppresses the cravings of nafs, keeps from sinful passions. Scientists said that first of all, a person should be ashamed of Allah, that is, keep himself from sin, knowing that the Creator sees everything.
And the second kind of bashfulness is false bashfulness, which is a negative quality. False bashfulness is, for example, not fulfilling one's duties, embarrassing people, or refraining from calling for good or forbidding evil.
Conscience is a powerful weapon against evil. He who does not possess this quality is accessible to every vice. Therefore, strengthen shyness in yourself, because it protects you from temptations and doing things that you will regret on the Day of Judgment.
Be God-fearing, obey the commands of Allah and do not overstep the prohibitions.
